Ecosan Services Foundation is a non-profit organisation with a vast knowledge in the field of wastewater management and stakeholder involvement. The approach of ESF is mostly the participatory planning approach, which brings together the stakeholders from all levels towards reaching an agreement and the final implementation of projects. ESF is also implementing tailor-made water optimisation strategies in cooperation with municipalities and private partners.
Currently, ESF is involved in the development of several City Sanitation Plans (CSPs) for the government of India. Moreover, ESF offers improved and full-fledged training courses in SSMW in India, Nepal and Philippines. To promote awareness in different sectors of the community, ESF plans and organises workshops, seminars and conferences, thus ESF is well networked and acts as a promoter and catalyst for many projects in the field of sustainable water management in India.
As the network manager (task 7.4) ESF will manage and monitor the progress towards the creation and expansion of a permanent network of stakeholders (the community of practice, CoP), which is an overall objective of the project (WP6). Moreover, ESF will be co-leader of WP1 (assessment) and be responsible for the application of the local sustainability criteria to existing natural water treatment systems relevant for the project (task 1.3). It will be responsible for the implementation of a feasibility study regarding socio-economic, environmental and institutional aspects for the development of NaWaTech parks (task 2.3). ESF will also coordinate the site selection and implementation of these parks (task 3.1 and 3.2) and support NEERI for the validation study of the overall sustainability of the parks (task 3.4). ESF will be co-leader of WP5 (Dissemination and Training) and conduct several national workshops and trainings. Moreover ESF will be leader of the SME working package and be responsible of the integration of SMEs in the NaWaTech trainings. Due to its large network and experiences in stakeholder involvement, ESF will also play an important role within WP4 (NaWaTech CoP) and lead task 4.8 for the definition of a consolidation strategy for the NaWaTech partnership activities.
ESF has been very active in the last years participating in several international research and development projects such as the Asia Pro-Eco project “Ecosan capacity” in which ESF has been acting as the local coordinator. Some examples of project experiences relevant for this project are ACCESSanitation, Asia Pro Eco, GTZ PPP Project Sustainable Sanitation for India and Innovative Ecological Sanitation Network India.
